Luminessence Series Audiophile Reissue, 2LP In A Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

Jasmine reaches vinyl for the first time with this pressing, sixteen years after the session was issued on CD. It joins Luminessence, the audiophile vinyl-reissue series ECM named after the 1975 Jan Garbarek recording of Keith Jarrett compositions for saxophone and string orchestra, and which the label describes as a kaleidoscope shedding light on the jewels of its deep catalog in elegant, high-quality editions. ECM gives the eight songs four sides and a tip-on gatefold jacket, and carries over all the material from the original CD issue. The catalog number is ECM 2165; the records are black vinyl, cut at 33 RPM, and the jacket spine and center labels both print the number.

The four sides also re-index the music. What the CD ran as a single twelve-minute track five is cut here as two, a forty-five-second Intro and then "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life," so the record carries nine titles where the disc carried eight.

The music is a one-off duo session, recorded at Jarrett's home studio in New Jersey in March 2007 and held back until 2010. It was the first time Jarrett and Haden had recorded together in more than thirty years; the last had been the live Eyes of the Heart in 1976, from the closing stretch of Jarrett's American Quartet with Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman. Jarrett plays piano and Haden double bass, and the program is eight standards and love songs rather than originals, among them "For All We Know," "Body and Soul," "Goodbye" and "Don't Ever Leave Me." Three of the four longest performances pass nine minutes.

Jarrett's liner note calls it "spontaneous music made on the spot without any preparation save our dedication throughout our lives that we won't accept a substitute," played by musicians "trying, mostly, to keep the message intact." Writing when the album first appeared, Mike Hobart of the Financial Times noted that "it is more than 30 years since they last recorded together, but their dialogue has the detailed intimacy of old friends exploring common themes," and Dave Gelly in The Observer described Haden's bass, "with its intimate, woody tone," laying the groundwork under a piano part in which "the slightest harmonic nuance carries meaning."
