This is the Indie Exclusive pressing of Cailín, on Hawthorn-colored vinyl and sold through independent record stores. The album runs across two LPs in a gatefold jacket, with the music on three sides and an etching on side D. Kill Rock Stars issues the standard edition separately, on Hazel vinyl.

Cailín is Kate Nash's sixth studio album and her first since 9 Sad Symphonies in 2024. Kill Rock Stars describes it as a love letter to her Irish heritage, eleven years in the making.

KoOoLkOjAk produced the record, which was made at Stiúideo Cuan on the west coast of Ireland with the trad musician Charlie Lennon overseeing the sessions. Niamh Dunne, Lottie Cullen, Aimée Farrell Courtney and Lisa Canny of Biird play fiddles, flutes, bodhrán, harp and banjo, and Nash plays tin whistle, the first instrument she learned.

Nash's mother was born in Dublin, and Nash grew up in an Irish community in North Harrow. The songs draw on Irish folklore and mythology and take in family, forgiveness, colonialism, inequality and religion. "Famine" is her cover of the Sinéad O'Connor song, issued as a single ahead of the album. The lead single, "Spilt Milk," has a video directed by Tom Beard; Nash has said she first wrote it about Ireland's abortion law before the Eighth Amendment was repealed in 2018.

Nash is a BRIT Award winner whose career began with the 2007 single "Foundations." She has since toured as an independent punk artist and acted in the HBO series GLOW, and her 2025 single "GERM," also on Kill Rock Stars, reached the Billboard charts in the US.
