Black Vinyl

Ferdinand Records' 2026 edition, catalog number FERD-617-1, returns Sprained Ankle to a single black LP and uses the cover art Julien Baker drew herself for the record's first, self-released version rather than the artwork carried by the 6131 Records release.

Baker wrote these songs as a student at Middle Tennessee State University and did not intend to release them as an album. A friend, Michael Hegner, had free time at the university studio and offered to record them; in the summer of 2014 the two drove to Spacebomb Studios in Richmond, Virginia, where Hegner was interning, and cut the record there. Baker has said the sessions were kept sparse and efficient to get the most out of the time available, and that this shaped how the songs come across. The result went up on Bandcamp as an EP that winter. 6131 Records signed her and re-released it as an album on October 23, 2015, in a first vinyl pressing of 300 copies.

Nine songs across thirty-three minutes, built from sparse guitar and piano. Stereogum's review described them as discussing depression, substance abuse and crises of faith in detail. The album placed eighth on Jon Caramanica's best albums of 2015 for The New York Times and thirteenth on The A.V. Club's list for the same year, and Paste later ranked it among its hundred best indie folk albums of all time. Baker followed it with Turn Out the Lights in 2017. The video above is Sabyn Mayfield's clip for the title track, released in October 2015.
