Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series 180-Gram Stereo LP

This is Little Johnny C in Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Series: a stereo, all-analog edition mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal. The jacket keeps the original 84144 stereo cover design, and the lacquers carry Gray's Cohearent Audio mark in the runout.

Johnny Coles, a trumpeter born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1926, spent most of his career as a sought-after sideman, including a place in Charles Mingus's 1964 sextet alongside Eric Dolphy, Clifford Jordan, Jaki Byard and Dannie Richmond. He led few sessions of his own, and this is the only album he made for Blue Note.

Blue Note's notes credit the record to Duke Pearson. Pearson heard Coles take a solo with the Gil Evans orchestra at Birdland and again as a featured soloist in James Moody's band, and the two began working together. When Alfred Lion caught one of their gigs and took to a Pearson tune called "Little Johnny C," he gave Pearson the go-ahead to organize a Blue Note date with Coles as leader. Pearson arranged the program and wrote five of its six pieces; the sixth, "Hobo Joe," is Joe Henderson's.

The sextet recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on July 18 and August 9, 1963, with Alfred Lion producing. Leo Wright plays alto saxophone and flute, Henderson tenor saxophone, Pearson piano and Bob Cranshaw bass. Walter Perkins drums on the first side and Pete La Roca on the second, so each side of the LP is one session. AllMusic's Scott Yanow gave the album 4.5 stars.
