180-Gram Black Vinyl LP in Gatefold Jacket

Varèse Sarabande reissued Charles Gerhardt's recording of the Symphonic Suite from The Empire Strikes Back as a single 180-gram black vinyl LP, catalog number VSD00357. According to the label, it had been out of print since its original pressing in 1980.

Gerhardt conducted the National Philharmonic Orchestra at Walthamstow Town Hall in London on May 2, 1980. George Korngold produced the session, and Charles P. Britton and Thomas A. Britton, Jr. were executive producers. The opening 20th Century-Fox Fanfare is credited on the sleeve to its composer, Alfred Newman.

Varèse Sarabande's notes say the album was made to supplement the 2-LP motion picture soundtrack rather than compete with it. It joins the suite Williams wrote for concert performance with new arrangements of other cues from the score. In his sleeve note, Williams says Gerhardt asked to record the suite, and he credits the conductor's earlier Star Wars and Close Encounters recordings with Korngold for his interest in the project. Gerhardt and the orchestra went on to record Return of the Jedi in 1983.

The gatefold jacket reproduces William Stout's original Star Wars paintings alongside photographs of Williams. It carries notes by author Ray Bradbury, by composer and critic Christopher Palmer, and by Williams himself.
