Vinyl Voice Edition · Red Marble Vinyl LP

This is Varèse Sarabande's red marble Vinyl Voice Edition pressing of The Empire Strikes Back: Symphonic Suite from the Original Motion Picture Score, catalog number VSD00357, issued in the US on May 2, 2025. That street date falls forty-five years to the day after the sessions: the album's jacket credits the recording to May 2, 1980, at Walthamstow Town Hall in London.

This is not the film's soundtrack album. Charles Gerhardt conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra in a single-LP program that Varèse Sarabande describes as joining the "Symphonic Suite" John Williams wrote for concert performance with new arrangements of other cues from the score. The label notes that it was first issued to supplement, not compete with, the 2-LP soundtrack, which RSO Records released in 1980 with seventy-five minutes of the film recording. George Korngold produced the sessions, and the recording is licensed to Varèse Sarabande from Chalfont Records.

Williams said he was delighted when Gerhardt asked to record the suite, and called himself a great fan of the conductor's recorded performances. In the same note he praised "Gerhardt's opulent sound and dramatic phrasing." His score for the film earned him another Academy Award nomination.

The record runs thirteen tracks and about forty-five minutes. Side one opens with Alfred Newman's 20th Century-Fox Fanfare and closes on the Hoth battle music. Side two begins with The Imperial March and includes Yoda's Theme before the Finale.
