Rhino Reserve 180g Black Vinyl

This is the Rhino Reserve pressing of Prime Prine, from Rhino's premium vinyl series. The lacquers were cut from the original analog masters by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and the record is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing in Oxnard, California. It ships in a single-pocket jacket, sealed in a poly bag with a wrap-over sticker. Rhino's notes call it the first US LP issue of the compilation since the original 1976 release.

Rhino released it on July 31, 2026, in the closing wave of its Spirit of '76 campaign, a 23-album run of reissues drawn from the 1976 catalog.

Atlantic first issued Prime Prine in 1976 as a best-of drawn from all four of Prine's albums for the label. Four songs come from his 1971 debut, John Prine: "Sam Stone," "Donald and Lydia," "Illegal Smile" and "Hello in There." "The Great Compromise" and "Souvenirs" come from Diamonds in the Rough (1972), and four more from Sweet Revenge (1973). "Saddle in the Rain" and "Come Back to Us Barbara Lewis Hare Krishna Beauregard" are the only two songs here from Common Sense (1975), which Steve Cropper produced in Memphis and Los Angeles.

Common Sense was Prine's last studio album for Atlantic. He signed a three-album deal with Asylum in 1977 and made Bruised Orange there with his friend Steve Goodman producing.

The video above is a 1970s performance of "Sam Stone," the record's opening track, posted by Prine's official channel.
