Limited Edition 180-Gram Virgin Vinyl LP With Bonus Track

This is the Number One Essentials reissue of My Favorite Things, catalog number 291057: a limited edition on 180-gram virgin vinyl, imported from Spain. It carries the complete original album over two sides and adds one bonus track, "Like Sonny," at the close of side B.

The four album tracks were cut at Atlantic Studios in New York in October 1960 by the first settled lineup of the John Coltrane Quartet, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Those same sessions also yielded the material Atlantic later issued as Coltrane Plays the Blues and Coltrane's Sound. Atlantic first released the album in March 1961.

Side A has Coltrane on soprano saxophone, the first album on which he recorded with it; Miles Davis had bought him the instrument on a European tour earlier that year. The title track recasts the Rodgers and Hammerstein song from The Sound of Music as a modal piece in waltz time, with Coltrane and Tyner soloing over vamps on E minor and E major rather than the written changes. An edited version became a radio hit in 1961. He returns to tenor for side B, which pairs Gershwin's "Summertime" with an arrangement of "But Not for Me" built on the substitution changes heard on "Giant Steps."

Lewis Porter's biography records Coltrane naming the title track as his favorite of everything he had recorded. The album entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and was certified gold in 2018 for sales of 500,000 copies.
