Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 180 Gram Black Vinyl LP in Gatefold Jacket

This edition of Impressions belongs to Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series, the all-analog 180-gram reissue line for the Verve and Impulse! catalogs. It is a single LP transferred from the original analog tapes and pressed at Quality Record Pressings in Kansas. Chad Kassem of Acoustic Sounds, the company behind Analogue Productions, drives the series with Verve.

The packaging follows the 1963 original. A glossy laminated gatefold carries the Stereo A-42 badge on its front, the disc labels use the orange Impulse! design of the period, and the record sits in a plastic-lined inner sleeve. The sequence is the original four tracks, so "Dear Old Stockholm," the bonus track added on later CD reissues, is not here. Reviewing this pressing for ecoustics, Mark Smotroff compared it with his own first pressing and found the reissue fuller and less compressed, with the twin basses of Jimmy Garrison and Reggie Workman more present.

Impulse! first issued Impressions in July 1963, gathering performances from 1961 to 1963 into a 36:40 album. "India" and the title piece were recorded live at the Village Vanguard in November 1961, in the same residency that produced "Live" at the Village Vanguard. On those nights the quartet of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones was joined by Eric Dolphy and Reggie Workman. Dolphy takes a long bass clarinet solo on "India" and sits out all but the final chord of "Impressions." Workman plays only on "India," where his bass and Garrison's approximate the drone of Hindustani classical music.

The two shorter pieces come from Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey: "Up 'Gainst the Wall" on September 18, 1962, and "After the Rain" on April 29, 1963, with Roy Haynes on drums. Bob Thiele produced and Rudy Van Gelder engineered. Roger McGuinn has said the Byrds toured in late 1965 with one tape on the bus, holding Impressions and Africa/Brass on one side. The band's 1966 single "Eight Miles High" was a homage to Coltrane, and to "India" in particular.
