Blue Note launched the Essential Vinyl Series on International Jazz Day in 2026 and describes it as "an entry point for new jazz fans that presents essential titles at a great price cut from hi-res digital masters on 140g vinyl." That is the whole specification, and it is worth stating plainly: the series is cut from high-resolution digital masters rather than the analog tapes, on 140 gram vinyl, at a price well under the label's audiophile lines. This copy is pressed on azure blue vinyl, a limited edition marking the centennial of Coltrane's birth in September 1926.

Blue Train was recorded on September 15, 1957 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, produced by Alfred Lion, and issued in January 1958. It is Coltrane's only album as a leader for Blue Note.

He brought a sextet: Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Four of the five pieces are Coltrane's own; "I'm Old Fashioned" is the Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer standard. The sleeve is Reid Miles's design over a Francis Wolff photograph, and the 2026 pressing keeps it.
