Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

Craft Recordings brings Power to the People back to vinyl as part of the Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf Series, in what the label describes as the album's first vinyl reissue in 50 years. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes, keeping the chain all-analog (AAA). RTI pressed the record on 180-gram black vinyl. It ships in a tip-on gatefold jacket that restores the Milestone label design under catalog number CR00655.

The session took place at Plaza Sound Studios in New York on May 23 and 29, 1969, with Orrin Keepnews producing. Milestone issued the album that same year as Henderson's third studio album for the label, following Tetragon. Herbie Hancock moves between acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes, Ron Carter between double bass and electric bass, and Jack DeJohnette plays drums throughout. Trumpeter Mike Lawrence joins on the two quintet numbers recorded on the first day, "Afro-Centric" and the title track. Hancock's electric piano and Carter's bass guitar were the first electric instruments to appear on a Henderson record.

The album holds the first recording of Henderson's "Black Narcissus," a tune he returned to as the title track of a 1977 Milestone album. The original back-cover notes, reproduced here, open by quoting Down Beat's description of Henderson as "the finest tenor player active."
