Blue Note Tone Poet Vinyl Series Stereo 180g LP in Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This is the stereo edition of The Sermon! in Blue Note's Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series. Joe Harley produced it, and Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio mastered it from the original analog master tapes. It is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI) and housed in a deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket. Blue Note's own notes trace the series to label president Don Was's admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters, which led him to bring Harley in to supervise it.

The jacket front keeps the original Blue Note 4011 design. Inside, the gatefold opens on black-and-white session photographs, one of them captioned with Alfred Lion, Smith and Kenny Burrell at Manhattan Towers in New York on February 25, 1958.

Alfred Lion first recorded Smith, the Hammond B3 organist, in 1956. The Sermon! was cut at the Manhattan Towers ballroom on August 25, 1957 and February 25, 1958, with Rudy Van Gelder engineering and Lion producing. The same dates produced House Party, the album before it, and The Sermon! became Smith's fifteenth album for Blue Note. Across the two sessions he plays with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Lou Donaldson and George Coleman on alto saxophone, Tina Brooks on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell and Eddie McFadden on guitar, and Art Blakey and Donald Bailey on drums. Donaldson and Brooks play on the title track only.

That title track is a blues of about 20 minutes, and it fills side A here as it filled one side of the original Blue Note LP. Side B pairs the minor-key original "J.O.S." with "Flamingo", a ballad that Blue Note's notes describe as a showcase for Morgan.
