Bluesville Series 180-Gram Vinyl, Tip-On Jacket with Obi

Craft Recordings' Bluesville Series pressing of Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall, catalog number CR00981. Lacquers were cut AAA from the original master tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab at Blue Heaven Studios, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at QRP in conjunction with Acoustic Sounds. It is housed in a replica tip-on jacket with an obi strip.

Vee-Jay issued the album in 1961 as a double LP. This edition reproduces the first record of that set, the eleven songs tied to Reed's Carnegie Hall program, and reprints Pete Welding's original sleeve essay on the back cover. The obi carries new reflections by Grammy-winning producer and songwriter Scott Billington.

The concert was real; the recording is not. Reed played Carnegie Hall in 1961 on a package bill that also included Muddy Waters and Big Maybelle, but contractual and technical difficulties kept the night off tape. Vee-Jay recorded the program in the studio instead, at Bell Sound Studios in New York in 1961, with earlier Chicago sessions at Universal Recording Studio supplying the back half of side two, and packaged the results around the booking. Welding's notes call it a re-creation and say so on the sleeve.

Reed sings and plays guitar and harmonica, with Mary "Mama" Reed on background vocals, "Lefty" Bates on guitar and Earl Phillips on drums. The jacket credits Willie Dixon on bass and Lee Baker, later known as Lonnie Brooks, along with Eddie Taylor and Phil Upchurch on guitar across individual side-two tracks. Side one opens with "Bright Lights Big City," which The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included in its 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll; side two opens with "Aw Shucks Hush Your Mouth."
