Remastered 180g Black Vinyl LP

Legacy Recordings issued this newly remastered edition of Surrealistic Pillow in February 2021. It is the stereo version, cut to a single 180-gram black LP, catalog number 19439819101. The front cover keeps the original RCA Victor stereo layout, LSP-3766 catalog number and STEREO banner included. The eleven songs run in their 1967 order, five on side one and six on side two, for a running time of 34:02.

RCA Victor first released the album in 1967. It was Jefferson Airplane's second album and the first to feature vocalist Grace Slick and drummer Spencer Dryden, joining Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady. It peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" both came from Slick's previous band, The Great Society. They reached number five and number eight on the Hot 100 and remain the band's only Top 40 hits on that chart. In 2024 the Library of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry.

Producer Rick Jarrard recorded the album at RCA Victor's Hollywood studios between October 31 and November 22, 1966, starting two weeks after Slick joined. The stereo mix uses noticeably more reverb than the mono version issued alongside it. The album credits Jerry Garcia as musical and spiritual advisor. Garcia later said he played the high lead guitar on "Today" and rearranged "Somebody to Love." Herb Greene photographed the band for the cover in his San Francisco dining room. The title came from Garcia telling Balin the music was "as surrealistic as a pillow."
