Original Columbia Issue
The album as Columbia first issued it in August 1994 — ten tracks, single disc, catalogue number CK 57528 — rather than the 2004 Legacy Edition that added a second disc and a DVD.
Buckley recorded it mostly at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, with overdubs in Manhattan and New Jersey, across roughly six months. Andy Wallace produced, engineered and mixed it; Howie Weinberg mastered it at Masterdisk and Karl Berger wrote the string arrangements. Buckley sang and played guitar, harmonium and organ, with Mick Grondahl on bass and Matt Johnson on drums and percussion.
Three of the ten are covers: Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," the standard "Lilac Wine," and Benjamin Britten's arrangement of the "Corpus Christi Carol." The Library of Congress added Buckley's recording of "Hallelujah" to the National Recording Registry in 2014.
It reached No. 149 on the Billboard 200 on release and sold past two million copies worldwide by 2011, going six times platinum in Australia; the RIAA certified it platinum in 2016.
