ECM Luminessence Series Audiophile LP in Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This is the Luminessence edition of Afric Pepperbird, part of ECM's audiophile vinyl reissue series. The series returns titles from the label's catalog in tip-on gatefold jackets with new liner notes, cut from the original masters with analog production wherever possible. Tracking Angle reported it as the album's first vinyl reissue since 1976. ECM issued this edition in 2024 alongside Luminessence, the 1975 Garbarek recording of Keith Jarrett compositions that gave the series its name. It is a single LP with three pieces on side A and five on side B, and it carries the original catalog number, ECM 1007.

Afric Pepperbird was recorded on September 22 and 23, 1970, at Arne Bendiksen Studio in Oslo, with Manfred Eicher producing and Jan Erik Kongshaug engineering. It was Garbarek's first album for ECM and the label's seventh release, and ECM dates its first issue to New Year's Day 1971. In Jan Omdahl's account for Tracking Angle, Eicher came by train from Munich after hearing the quartet at the Bologna jazz festival, and Kongshaug was about to close for the day when the late session was booked. London Jazz News reports that Eicher later sent the record with a letter to Keith Jarrett to show the kind of music he had in mind.

All four players are Norwegian: Garbarek on tenor and bass saxophones, clarinet, flutes and percussion; Terje Rypdal on guitar and bugle; Arild Andersen on bass, African thumb piano and xylophone; and Jon Christensen on percussion. Garbarek wrote four of the eight pieces, the title track among them. Andersen contributed "Mah-Jong," "MYB" and "Concentus," and Christensen the closing "Blupp."

Reviewing the album for DownBeat in 1971, Joe Klee wrote that "Garbarek should be heard." AllMusic's Brian Olewnick places it among the strongest and most aggressive work of Garbarek's career, made before he settled into what became known as the ECM aesthetic.
