Blue Note Tone Poet Vinyl Edition, 180g Black Vinyl, Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This pressing of Vertigo belongs to Blue Note's Tone Poet series: an all-analog stereo reissue produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes, and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI). The tip-on gatefold opens on black-and-white photographs taken at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs on February 11, 1963, with portraits of each member of the quintet, and an insert carries the liner notes under the original catalog number, LT-1085.

The series grew out of Blue Note president Don Was's admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters. Was brought in Joe Harley, known as the "Tone Poet," to choose and supervise the titles. Blue Note placed Vertigo in the series' 2026 line-up with an August 7 street date, alongside Ike Quebec's Bossa Nova Soul Samba.

Five of the six tracks come from that February 1963 date, with Donald Byrd on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass and Tony Williams on drums. McLean cut it two months before recording One Step Beyond, and Blue Note held it back: the session first appeared in 1980 as part of the LT series, and did not reach CD until 2000. Blue Note's own notes point to post-bop on the title track, funk on "Dusty Foot" and slow blues on "Yams."

"Formidable," which closes side one, comes from an earlier session on May 2, 1959. It is a Walter Davis Jr. composition, with Byrd again on trumpet, Davis at the piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums. Byrd wrote "Dusty Foot" and built "Marney" on motifs by the film composer Bernard Herrmann, who shares the credit; Hancock wrote "Yams," and McLean wrote "Vertigo" and "Cheers." The 2000 CD reordered the program and added a 1962 session, but this LP keeps the six-track running order of the 1980 issue. In September 2026 the album reached number 13 on Germany's official jazz albums chart.
