Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series 180g Stereo LP

This pressing of Swing, Swang, Swingin' belongs to Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Series, the label's line of all-analog reissues. Kevin Gray mastered it from the original master tapes, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal. It carries the stereo program under catalog number 7820469, and the jacket keeps the original BST 84024 stereo number. Cem Kurosman chose the titles in the series' 2026 slate.

McLean cut the album on October 20, 1959, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Alfred Lion producing and Van Gelder engineering. He is the only horn on the session, fronting Walter Bishop Jr. on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Blue Note's notes place it as his second release for the label, after a decade on the New York scene that took in work with Miles Davis and Charles Mingus.

The program leans on standards: Johnny Burke and Bob Haggart's "What's New?", Irving Berlin's "Let's Face the Music and Dance", Johnny Mercer and Victor Schertzinger's "I Remember You", Cole Porter's "I Love You" and Oscar Hammerstein II and Ben Oakland's "I'll Take Romance", alongside Benny Golson's "Stablemates". McLean's own blues, "116th and Lenox", closes the record, and Blue Note paired it with "What's New" on a 1960 single, 45-1760.

Reid Miles designed the original cover around Francis Wolff's photography, and Ira Gitler wrote the liner notes. AllMusic's Steve Huey called the album "a solid session from an artist just beginning an incredible hot streak."
