Blue Note Tone Poet Vinyl Edition - 180 Gram Stereo LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This is the stereo Tone Poet pressing of Bossa Nova Soul Samba, carrying catalog number BST 84114 on its labels and spine. Joe Harley produced the reissue, Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio mastered it from the original analog master tapes, and Record Technology Inc. (RTI) pressed it on 180-gram vinyl. It comes in a tip-on gatefold jacket that opens onto black-and-white session portraits of Quebec and each of his four sidemen. Blue Note issued it on August 7, 2026, with Jackie McLean's Vertigo as the other Tone Poet title that month.

The series started because Blue Note president Don Was admired the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters. Was brought in Harley, the "Tone Poet" the series is named for, to pick and oversee titles from across the Blue Note family of labels. Quebec's The Complete Blue Note 45 Sessions has also been issued in the series.

The session took place on October 5, 1962, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Alfred Lion producing. Kenny Burrell played guitar, Wendell Marshall bass, Willie Bobo drums and Garvin Masseaux chekere. In Nat Hentoff's original liner notes, Quebec said he wanted to give the bossa nova more of a blues feeling and more sensuality. It was his last recording. He died of lung cancer in January 1963, aged 44, and Lion later recalled that Quebec was in a great deal of pain at the date.

According to a Jazzwise review of this reissue, Quebec avoided the Jobim songbook that other American players were drawing on in 1962. He chose songs by an older generation of Brazilian composers instead, among them Antonio Almeida's "Shu Shu" and Heckel Tavares' "Favela." The program also includes Burrell's "Loie," two Quebec originals ("Me 'N You" and "Blue Samba"), and bossa arrangements of Dvorak's "Goin' Home" and Liszt's "Liebestraum." In his AllMusic review, Scott Yanow highlights Quebec's warm, long tones and compares them to Coleman Hawkins. Quebec had also worked as an A&R man for Blue Note in the late 1940s, when he brought Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell to the label.
