Chess 75 Series 180 Gram Mono LP in Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This LP belongs to the Chess Records 75 Series, an audiophile reissue program from Chess and Acoustic Sounds marking 75 years since Leonard and Phil Chess founded the label in Chicago in 1950. Matthew Lutthans remastered it from the original analog tapes and cut it to lacquer at The Mastering Lab. Quality Record Pressings pressed it in mono on 180-gram vinyl, and it comes in a tip-on gatefold jacket printed on high-grade board. The front of the sleeve keeps the original catalog number, LP 1434. Moanin' in the Moonlight and The Best of Muddy Waters were the two titles that opened the series in October 2025.

Issued by Chess in 1959, Moanin' in the Moonlight was Howlin' Wolf's first album, gathering a dozen sides first released as singles. The two oldest, "Moanin' at Midnight" and "How Many More Years," were cut in 1951 at Sam Phillips' Memphis Recording Service with Ike Turner on piano and Willie Johnson on guitar, then sold to the Chess brothers. Later sessions brought in Hubert Sumlin and Otis Spann, with Willie Dixon on double bass; Dixon also wrote "Evil." Writer Robert Palmer has cited "How Many More Years" as the first record to feature a distorted power chord, played by Johnson. Wolf had grown up idolizing folk and country singers, and the Chess notes quote his explanation: "I couldn't do no yodelin', so I turned to howlin'."

The original jacket carried cover art by Don S. Bronstein and sleeve notes by Billboard editor Paul Ackerman, and a Billboard advertisement in August 1959 misprinted the title as Howlin' at Midnite. The album received a W.C. Handy Award in 1987 in the vintage/reissue category, and Rolling Stone placed it at number 477 on its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
