Chess Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Mono LP in Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This edition of Howlin' Wolf's second Chess album is part of the Chess Records Acoustic Sounds Series, the audiophile reissue line drawn from the Chess catalog and issued under the label's 75th-anniversary banner. The mastering is all-analog, cut from the original analog tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and the disc is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings. The record plays in mono and comes in a tip-on gatefold jacket printed on high-grade board, with the original Chess LP 1469 front cover reproduced.

First issued by Chess in 1962, the album gathered twelve sides the label had already released as singles between June 1957 and December 1961. Don S. Bronstein's illustration on the sleeve gave it the nickname The Rockin' Chair Album, which some later pressings printed on the cover. Willie Dixon wrote most of the songs and played bass on the sessions, alongside Hubert Sumlin on guitar, Otis Spann on piano and Fred Below and Sam Lay on drums, with Jimmy Rogers among the other guitarists. Ralph Bass is credited as producer and sleeve-note writer, Ron Malo as engineer. The Blues Foundation honored the album in 1985 in its Classics of Blues Recordings category.

Much of the track list went on to a second life in other hands. Sam Cooke took "Little Red Rooster" to No. 7 on the R&B chart in 1963, and the Rolling Stones' version was a UK No. 1 single in 1964. Koko Taylor's 1966 "Wang Dang Doodle" reached No. 4 R&B; Cream recorded "Spoonful" on Fresh Cream the same year, and the Doors put "Back Door Man" on their 1967 debut. In 1969 Led Zeppelin worked lines from "Shake For Me" and "Back Door Man" into "Whole Lotta Love."
