Sumerian Records houses its standard CD of Modern Life Is Lonely in a digipak with an obi strip and an 8-page booklet, catalog number SUM3946. The label also issues a special edition CD in a keep case with an instruction-manual booklet, under a different barcode.

Holding Absence formed in Cardiff in 2015. They now work as a trio of vocalist Lucas Woodland, guitarist Scott Carey and bassist Benjamin Elliott, after drummer Ashley Green parted ways with the band in October 2024.

Their three earlier albums came out on SharpTone: Holding Absence in 2019, The Greatest Mistake of My Life in 2021, which reached No. 90 in the UK, and The Noble Art of Self Destruction in 2023, which reached No. 67. They also shared split releases with Loathe, This Is as One in 2018, and with Alpha Wolf, The Lost & the Longing in 2022.

"Reflection" was released in May 2026 alongside the news of the band's signing to Sumerian, and its video was made by director Zak Pinchin, whose credits include Loathe and Bury Tomorrow. Woodland called the album "our boldest and most creative body of work to date." The title track followed as a single on August 24, 2026, and Woodland has described it as steeped in lo-fi while set against one of the heaviest moments in the band's catalog.
