Blue Note Essentials Series 140g Black Vinyl LP

This LP comes from Blue Note Essentials, a vinyl line the label announced on April 30, 2026, International Jazz Day. Maiden Voyage was one of the five titles that opened the series, along with The Sidewinder and Song For My Father. Essentials is meant as an affordable first stop for listeners new to the catalog. Each title is mastered from high-resolution digital masters and pressed on 140g black vinyl. The series sits beside Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Series, which is cut all-analog by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl.

Rudy Van Gelder recorded the album at his Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey studio on March 17, 1965, with Alfred Lion producing. It was Hancock's fifth album as a leader, first issued as BLP 4195 in mono and BST 84195 in stereo. Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Tony Williams and tenor saxophonist George Coleman had all recently played in the Miles Davis quintet, and Freddie Hubbard joined them on trumpet. Six days before the March 17 session, Blue Note had tried to record three of the tunes with Hubbard on cornet and Stu Martin on drums. That session was rejected, and its tapes have never been found.

The record is built around the sea, and most of its titles point to the ocean or the creatures in it. Hancock first wrote the title piece as background music for a television commercial. He has named Count Basie's "Shiny Stockings" as the main inspiration for "Dolphin Dance." "Little One" was also cut that year by the Davis quintet for E.S.P. Today "Maiden Voyage," "The Eye Of The Hurricane" and "Dolphin Dance" are jazz standards. The Penguin Guide to Jazz lists the album in its Core Collection, and it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
