Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This LP is one of the twelve titles Craft Recordings scheduled for the 2024 run of the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, a program supervised by Chad Kassem of Acoustic Sounds. Bernie Grundman cut the lacquers from the original analog master tapes, keeping the chain fully AAA, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings. It comes in a tip-on jacket printed by Stoughton Printing, carrying catalog number CR00708 and the 1969 Contemporary artwork, with Ray Avery's cover photograph and George Kershaw's design.

The Fox was recorded at Radio Recorders Studio B in Los Angeles in August 1959, produced by David Axelrod with Art Becker and David Wiechman engineering. It first appeared in 1960 as Hifijazz 612, a small label's release, and Contemporary remastered and reissued it in 1969. Land leads a quintet with Dupree Bolton on trumpet, Elmo Hope on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass and Frank Butler on drums. Leonard Feather's liner notes, dated October 7, 1969 and reproduced on the back of the jacket, record that this was Bolton's first session and that Lewis was 18 when he made his recording debut on it.

Hope wrote four of the six pieces. Land contributed the title track and "Little Chris," which he wrote for his young son. The Penguin Guide to Jazz names The Fox as Land's finest moment, and AllMusic's Scott Yanow calls it high-quality hard bop.
