Blue Note Tone Poet Series 180g Stereo LP in Tip-On Gatefold

This is the stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of Dippin'. Joe Harley produced it, Kevin Gray mastered it at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes, and Record Technology Inc. (RTI) pressed it on 180-gram vinyl. The jacket is a deluxe tip-on gatefold. The front keeps the original 84209 stereo cover design, and the inside spread carries session photographs taken at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on June 18, 1965.

Blue Note launched the Tone Poet series in 2019 under Harley, the "Tone Poet" of its name. Blue Note's own notes trace the series to Don Was's admiration for the Music Matters reissues. Mobley has turned up in the series before, most recently with Hank from 1957 and Third Season from 1967.

Alfred Lion produced the session in a single day at Van Gelder Studio, and Blue Note issued the album in 1966 as BST 84209. Mobley leads a quintet with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Harold Mabern Jr. on piano, Larry Ridley on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. It was the second of nine Blue Note sessions pairing Mobley with Morgan during the trumpeter's second stint at the label. It was also the second of nine Mobley sessions in a row with Higgins behind the kit. The date fell in a productive 1965 for Mobley that also yielded The Turnaround and A Caddy For Daddy.

Four of the six pieces are Mobley originals. The other two come from outside: "Recado Bossa Nova" by Luiz Antonio and Djalma Ferreira, and the Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz standard "I See Your Face Before Me." Blue Note describes the set as spanning boogaloo, bossa nova, ballads and bop. The label's artist biography hears a funkier soul-jazz sound starting to creep into Mobley's work here. Reviewing for AllMusic, Thom Jurek gave the album 4.5 stars and called it "one of Hank Mobley's finer moments."
