Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180g Vinyl LP

This LP of Four! belongs to the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, the Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds program marking 70 years of the Los Angeles label, and it arrived as the series' July 15, 2022 title. Bernie Grundman, himself a former Contemporary employee, cut the all-analog master from the original tapes. The record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings and housed in a Stoughton Old Style tip-on jacket.

The jacket follows the original Stereo Records issue, with catalog number CR00387 printed on the front and Richard Gross's golf-course portrait of the four players. The back reprints Nat Hentoff's liner notes, dated October 12, 1958, alongside the session's original technical data.

The quartet is Hampton Hawes on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass and Shelly Manne on drums, recorded in a single day, January 27, 1958, at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles. Roy DuNann engineered and Lester Koenig produced. The program pairs Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite" and four standards with two originals: Mitchell's "Bow Jest," which Hentoff's notes identify as the bassist's first recorded bowed solo, and Hawes's own "Up Blues." Hentoff also records that the date was the first time in about a year that Hawes had played with Manne.

Four! followed the All Night Session! volumes in Hawes's run of Contemporary albums. AllMusic's Scott Yanow rates it five stars, and The Penguin Guide to Jazz gives it three and a half.
