Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP

This edition of For Real! is part of Craft Recordings' Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series. Bernie Grundman cut the lacquers from the original tapes in an all-analog (AAA) chain, Quality Record Pressings (QRP) pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl, and it comes in a tip-on jacket. Craft's announcement for the series says the Contemporary sessions were originally engineered by Roy DuNann and/or Howard Holzer. The back cover of this album credits the sound to DuNann. The jacket and labels carry catalog number CR00709, and the back cover says "Made in U.S.A."

Hawes recorded the album on March 17, 1958, at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles. Harold Land played tenor saxophone, Scott LaFaro bass and Frank Butler drums, and Lester Koenig produced. Contemporary held the session back until 1961 and then issued it as M 3589 in mono and S 7589 in stereo. Three of the six pieces are originals: "Hip" by Hawes, and "Numbers Game" and the title track, which he wrote with Land. The other three are by outside writers: "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams" (Barris, Koehler and Moll), Benny Harris's bebop line "Crazeology" and Cole Porter's "I Love You."

The cover photograph is by the drummer Stan Levey, and the cover design is by Kershaw, Guidi/Tri-Arts. On the back are Leonard Feather's liner notes, dated July 8, 1961, and a short tribute to LaFaro by Koenig. Koenig wrote it as the notes were going to print, after the bassist died in an automobile accident on July 6, 1961, at the age of 25. In his AllMusic review, Scott Yanow says Hawes "is in top form throughout the generally memorable outing."
