12-Inch Vinyl EP Pressed by Cascade Record Pressing

This is the 12-inch vinyl edition of Late Bloomer, the six-song EP Haley Johnsen first released on July 12, 2024. Her own store lists the record as pressed locally by Cascade Record Pressing. Willamette Week reported ahead of release day that a small vinyl run would follow later in the year, and this is that record: catalog number 0001, with Warren Wyatt credited on the back cover as executive producer.

Johnsen, a singer and songwriter from Portland, Oregon, made the EP with Austin producer and songwriter Dwight Baker, known for his work with Far From Saints and The Wind and the Wave. Their collaboration began in 2022 and ran about two years. Baker produced and mixed the record, engineered it with Jackson Alan Baker, and played acoustic guitar, drums and percussion. Dave McNair mastered it. Five of the six songs are Johnsen and Baker co-writes; the title track is Johnsen's alone.

The rest of the band, per the sleeve: Jedd Hughes on lead guitar, Tony Lucido on bass, Will Van Horn on pedal steel, Sean Giddings on keys and Jackson Alan Baker on synth. Johnsen's biography says the EP draws on Texas twang and the Oregon roots that raised her, and Willamette Week described it as an alt-pop Americana album "with soul and a backbone," built around letting go and speaking up.

Johnsen reached the top 24 of American Idol's eleventh season in 2012, then issued the EPs Through the Blue (2015) and When You Lit The Sky (2017). Since 2019 she has also played bass and sung backup for the electro-pop artist Big Wild. The video for opener "Maybe I Should," above, was directed and edited by Fortem Films and shot around Portland, including the Memory Den and Mt. Tabor.
