Black Double LP, Gatefold With Belly Band

Greg Freeman grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, which he has called a cultural wasteland, and learned fingerpicking and ensemble playing at community jam sessions held in a barbershop. He went to Burlington for the University of Vermont and stayed, finding a city where, as he tells it, everyone was in a band and there were endless shows; he wrote his earlier records around a full-time bakery job, and has also worked as a cemetery landscaper and a line cook.

All Set The Bone is his third album, after I Looked Out in 2022 and Burnover in 2025, and the first he wrote entirely as a full-time musician. He started it almost immediately after finishing Burnover: "I had this epiphany moment where I understood what the next record should be, which surprised me, because I thought it would take a lot longer to have the influences or inspiration required to undertake writing a new album." He moved from Burlington to the rural Southwest while making it, and describes thirteen songs pooling moving, grief and political tension. On his working method: "It should never feel comfortable. Every album should scare you."

John Congleton produced it in Los Angeles, quickly, with Transgressive's notes describing scant rehearsal times and urgent, self-appointed deadlines. Garrett Linck and Sam Atallah return from earlier records; Joey Sullivan of Florry, Carney Hemler of The Rockin Worms, Anna McClellan and Trinity Ace are new. "Indu" came first, in July, with the video above, and "Cahokia" followed in August, named for the ancient American city that flourished and then vanished, which Freeman calls the record's thesis statement.
