Blue Note Essential Vinyl Series 140 Gram Black Vinyl LP

This is the Blue Note Essential Vinyl Series edition of Idle Moments, part of an affordably priced catalog line the label introduced on International Jazz Day 2026. Essential titles are mastered from high-resolution digital masters and pressed on 140 gram vinyl, and the jacket carries the series sticker. Idle Moments arrived in the second group of Essential titles, issued September 25, 2026, as a single LP in the original four-track running order.

It is a different pressing from Blue Note's 2021 Classic Vinyl reissue of the same album, a 180 gram edition that Kevin Gray remastered directly from the original master tapes.

Grant Green cut the album at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, over two sessions on November 4 and 15, 1963, with Alfred Lion producing. Joe Henderson plays tenor saxophone, Bobby Hutcherson vibraphone, Duke Pearson piano, Bob Cranshaw bass and Al Harewood drums. Blue Note released it in stereo and mono in February 1965.

The title piece, a slow Pearson composition in C minor, runs nearly 15 minutes. Pearson's liner notes explain that it was meant to be much shorter, and that the band repeated the melody twice amid confusion over whether a chorus ran 16 or 32 bars. Lion suggested a retake to fit a seven-minute limit, but the first take is the one that was issued, and "Jean De Fleur" and "Django" were re-recorded in shorter versions to make room for it. Blue Note's own notes describe "Jean De Fleur" as a Green original, "Django" as John Lewis's Modern Jazz Quartet standard, and "Nomad" as another Pearson original.

AllMusic's Steve Huey called Idle Moments "the essential first Green purchase," and the jazz historian Scott Yanow named it among his 17 essential hard bop recordings.
