Blue Note Tone Poet Series Stereo 180g LP in Deluxe Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

This is the stereo Tone Poet edition of Feelin' the Spirit. Joe Harley produced it, and Kevin Gray mastered it at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes. Record Technology Inc. (RTI) in Camarillo, California pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, and it comes in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. The catalog number is B0033488-01, and the jacket carries the original stereo number, ST-84132. Inside the gatefold, the label's own photography shows black-and-white pictures from the December 21, 1962 session at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, with portraits of Green, Herbie Hancock, Billy Higgins and Butch Warren.

Blue Note launched the Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series in 2019 for its 80th anniversary. The label says the series grew out of president Don Was's admiration for the Music Matters reissues of Blue Note titles, and that Was brought in Joe Harley, known as the "Tone Poet," to oversee it. Writing in SoundStage! Ultra, Joseph Taylor counts this as the fourth Grant Green title in the series.

Green cut the album in one day at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Alfred Lion producing. Blue Note first issued it in 1963 as BLP 4132 in mono and BST 84132 in stereo. Hancock plays piano, Warren bass and Higgins drums, and Garvin Masseaux adds tambourine across five African American spirituals. It was one of six sessions Green led for Blue Note in 1962, a year when he also recorded Latin music and cowboy songs. The label calls it a companion piece to his earlier Sunday Mornin'. Joe Goldberg's original liner notes say Green approached the songs "with affection, but as music to be played in his style."

"Deep River" was added on later CD editions and is not on this LP. The record keeps the original five-track running order over two sides.
