Blue Note Tone Poet Series 180g Vinyl LP

This is the stereo Tone Poet edition of Moment of Truth. Joe Harley produced it, and Kevin Gray cut it at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes. It is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI) in Camarillo, California, and comes in a tip-on jacket with a single-sided liner notes insert. The labels keep the original Pacific Jazz number, ST-61. Blue Note's catalog number, B0033487-01, is printed on the back cover, the labels and the spine, and the runouts are etched.

The jacket goes back to the 1962 cover photograph and artwork. SoundStage Ultra notes that a 1981 reissue had swapped them for a generic sleeve carrying only the artist's name and the title. The Tone Poet jacket is heavy board with laminated, tipped-on art.

Blue Note started the Tone Poet series in 2019, the label's 80th anniversary year. It came out of label president Don Was's admiration for the Music Matters audiophile reissues, and he brought in Harley, a Music Matters co-founder, to choose and oversee the titles. Those titles come from across the Blue Note family of labels, Pacific Jazz included. Harley has said that he asked Wilson's son, Anthony Wilson, to come to the mastering session for this record.

Wilson's big band recorded the album at Pacific Jazz Studios in Los Angeles in August and September 1962, with Richard Bock producing. It was his second LP as a leader for Pacific Jazz. Wilson wrote seven of the nine pieces. The other two are Miles Davis's "Milestones" and "Emerge," by the band's trombonist Lester Robertson. In a 2006 interview with the National Endowment for the Arts, Wilson said "Viva Tirado" is named for the matador Jose Ramon Tirado. AllMusic's Scott Yanow gave the album four and a half stars, and his review notes that this original "Viva Tirado" later became a pop hit for El Chicano.

Joe Pass plays guitar on "Teri." The band also includes trumpeter Carmell Jones, trombonist Lou Blackburn, Bud Shank on alto saxophone and flute, and tenor saxophonists Harold Land and Teddy Edwards. The rhythm section is pianist Jack Wilson, bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Mel Lewis, and Modesto Duran adds congas on "Viva Tirado" and "Latino." Wilson was born in Shelby, Mississippi, and was named an NEA Jazz Master in 1990.
