Verve Vault Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This LP belongs to Verve's Verve Vault Series, which reissues titles from the Verve, Impulse! and Mercury catalogs as all-analog 180-gram pressings. Ryan K. Smith cut it from the original analog master tapes at Sterling Sound, and it was pressed at Optimal. Verve says the series pays close attention to the jacket as well as the mastering, and this one reproduces the original stereo front cover, catalog number V6-8749 and all. The series takes Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Series as its model and covers records from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Giblet Gravy came out on Verve in 1968 and was Benson's fourth album. Rough Trade's notes call it the first of two instrumental LPs he made for the label. Esmond Edwards, formerly of Prestige, produced it, and Tom McIntosh arranged and conducted the tracks with brass and voices. It was recorded in February 1968 at A&R Recording and Capitol Recording Studios in New York. The players include Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter and Bob Cranshaw on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, Johnny Pacheco on congas, Eric Gale and Carl Lynch on additional guitar, and Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone.

Benson wrote two of the nine tracks: the title track and "Low Down And Dirty," which closes side B. The other seven split between pop hits of the day and jazz tunes. The pop side has the Association's "Along Comes Mary," Bobby Hebb's "Sunny," Bacharach and David's "Walk On By" and the Young Rascals' "Groovin'." The jazz side has Cannonball Adderley's "Sack Of Woe," Harold Ousley's "Thunder Walk" and the standard "What's New?" Tommy LiPuma, who later produced Breezin' for Benson, has said that this Verve record was where he first really heard the guitarist.
