25th Anniversary Edition El Camino & Sand Splatter Vinyl LP

At The Dojo Records' 25th anniversary edition of California Crossing is pressed on custom El Camino and sand splatter vinyl and housed in a gatefold jacket. The audio is newly remastered. Fu Manchu's own US store lists the colorway as a limited run of 1,000 copies; a separate red, white and blue edition was issued for markets outside the US.

California Crossing was the band's seventh album, released by Mammoth Records on October 23, 2001. It was recorded at Sound City in Van Nuys with Matt Hyde, whose credits include Deftones, Slayer and Monster Magnet, producing and mixing alongside the band; vocals were cut at Aftermath in Laguna and the mix was finished at Henson Studios in Los Angeles. Nick Raskulinecz engineered, and Dave Collins mastered the original release at Steve Marcussen Mastering.

The lineup was Scott Hill on vocals and guitar, Bob Balch on guitar, Brad Davis on bass and Brant Bjork on drums. It was Bjork's last album with the band; he left after the sessions. Keith Morris of the Circle Jerks sings on "Bultaco," and the lyrics to the title track are credited to Rodney Skelton. The anniversary edition's sales notes call it the band's most commercially successful release and "Squash That Fly" its most successful radio single, and point to "Mongoose" turning up in a Toyota Super Bowl commercial, Sons of Anarchy, The Hot Chick and The Boondock Saints II. The album reached No. 98 on Australia's ARIA albums chart. The Guardian called it "a strangely nihilistic celebration of all things Cali," and NME described the band as "the stoned Ramones, a matey Motorhead."
