180-Gram Black Vinyl in a Gatefold Tip-On Jacket, Verve Acoustic Sounds Series

This Verve Acoustic Sounds Series LP of The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard is cut from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl. It comes in a gatefold tip-on jacket printed by Stoughton Printing, with the original Impulse! stereo designation, A-27, on the front and spine. The series reissues titles from the Verve and Universal Music Enterprises catalog under the supervision of Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds.

Hubbard recorded the album on July 2, 1962, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Bob Thiele producing. It was his first record for Impulse!, issued in early 1963, and it falls between two of his Blue Note albums, Ready for Freddie and Hub-Tones.

He led a sextet: Curtis Fuller on trombone, John Gilmore on tenor saxophone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Art Davis on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Acoustic Sounds' notes describe Gilmore's appearance as a rare one away from Sun Ra's orbit. In Ashley Kahn's 2006 Impulse! history The House That Trane Built, Hubbard said Thiele named the record for its writing, adding that the arrangements "really sounded like me."

Hubbard wrote three of the five pieces: "Bob's Place," "Happy Times" and "The 7th Day." The two standards are "Caravan," by Duke Ellington, Irving Mills and Juan Tizol, and "Summertime," by George and Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward. Three of the tracks run past ten minutes, and the album totals 42:40. In 2026 it reached number 68 on the IFPI Greek Albums chart.
