Blue Note Tone Poet Series 180g Black Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This is the stereo Tone Poet edition of Hub Cap, produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes. It is pressed on 180g vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI) and housed in a deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket.

The open gatefold carries black-and-white session photographs of the sextet, among them Hubbard with producer Alfred Lion at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs on April 9, 1961. The back cover keeps the original Blue Note ST-84073 layout and liner notes.

Blue Note president Don Was started the Tone Poet series out of admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters, and brought in Joe Harley, known as the "Tone Poet," to choose and supervise the titles. Hub Cap is one of Harley's picks for the 2026 run of the series.

Hub Cap was Hubbard's third album as a leader, following Open Sesame and Goin' Up, and first appeared on Blue Note in 1961 as BLP 4073 and BST 84073. Blue Note's notes describe it as the first of his dates for the label to also put his writing forward: four of the six pieces are his. The front line pairs Hubbard's trumpet with Julian Priester on trombone and Jimmy Heath on tenor saxophone, over Cedar Walton on piano, Larry Ridley on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums.

The title comes from Hubbard's nickname. Randy Weston wrote "Cry Me Not" for the session, with an arrangement by Melba Liston, and Hubbard called it "the most interesting tune on the record." "Luana" is dedicated to his niece, "Plexus" is Cedar Walton's composition, and "Earmon Jr.," arranged by Ed Summerlin, is named for Hubbard's brother, a pianist. The LP keeps the original six-track sequence; the alternate take of "Plexus" added to the 1988 CD is not part of it.
