Blue Note Tone Poet Series 180g Black Vinyl LP in Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

This is the stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of Breaking Point!, produced by Joe Harley, mastered all-analog by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI). Gray's initials are etched into both runouts as KPG@CA, beside the B0033315-01 matrix.

The deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket opens to Francis Wolff's black-and-white session photographs of Hubbard, James Spaulding, Ronnie Mathews, Eddie Khan and Joe Chambers, captioned to Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on May 7, 1964. Outside, Reid Miles's shattered-glass cover and the ST-84172 back cover, with the original liner notes AllMusic credits to Leonard Feather, are carried over.

Blue Note's own notes trace the Tone Poet series to label president Don Was's admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters; Was brought in Harley, the "Tone Poet" himself, to choose and supervise titles from the Blue Note family of labels. The series launched in 2019, the label's 80th anniversary year.

Hubbard cut the album with his new quintet shortly after leaving Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, with Alfred Lion producing and Van Gelder engineering, and Blue Note issued it as BST 84172 in August 1964. It was Joe Chambers' first recording; he wrote "Mirrors," and the other four pieces are Hubbard's. Blue Note's notes describe the title track moving from free-form playing into a calypso and back. In Hubbard's Blue Note chronology it falls between Doin' the Thang! and Blue Spirits.

In 2022, the year this edition was issued, Breaking Point! reached No. 4 on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart and No. 1 on the UK Jazz & Blues Albums chart. AllMusic's Michael G. Nastos called it "a recording far ahead of mid-'60s post-bop."
