Vinyl LP With the Sun Giant EP on a Second 12-inch Disc, Gatefold Jacket

Sub Pop's vinyl edition of Fleet Foxes (catalog SP777) is a two-record set: the debut album on one LP, and the band's earlier Sun Giant EP (SP781) pressed on a second 12-inch disc enclosed in the same gatefold jacket. Sub Pop notes that this set was the only way to own Sun Giant on vinyl until its November 2018 box, First Collection 2006-2009. The label's store lists a digital download code with the records, and barcode-matched retail listings add a printed insert.

The front of the jacket reproduces Netherlandish Proverbs, Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1559 painting of a village crowded with small, strange scenes. Robin Pecknold has said he found it in a book his girlfriend owned, and that the Berlin museum holding it agreed readily to its use. Opened out, the gatefold shows a paisley pattern Pecknold traced from the back of a book Skyler Skjelset's mother gave him. The sleeve won the Best Art Vinyl Award for 2008.

Sun Giant was recorded in eight days after the album sessions had finished, yet it reached the public first; it was originally meant to be sold only at shows. Its five songs fill sides C and D here, from the title track through "Mykonos" and "Innocent Son."

The album itself was made through 2007 with Seattle producer Phil Ek, who produced, engineered and mixed it. The liner notes place the sessions in the band members' homes, their friends' and parents' homes, London Bridge Studio and Avast Studio in Seattle, with mastering at RFI. The band paid for the recording themselves, before any label was involved, and signed with Sub Pop in January 2008. Every song was written by Robin Pecknold, and Gwen Owen adds flute to "Your Protector."

Released by Sub Pop on June 3, 2008, with Bella Union handling distribution overseas, Fleet Foxes entered the Billboard 200 at number 83 on sales of 8,000 in its first week. It had passed 500,000 copies in the United States by late 2013 and is certified Platinum in the UK. Uncut gave it the magazine's inaugural Uncut Award, The Times placed it first on its list of the best records of 2008, and Mojo granted it the "Instant Classic" label.
