Preacher's Daughter is issued here on cassette for the first time, through Ethel Cain's own Daughters of Cain Records under catalog number DOCCS01. All thirteen songs, roughly seventy-five minutes of music, sit on a single tape in a clear shell, with the album's cover photograph on the J-card.

Ethel Cain is the project of multimedia artist Hayden Anhedönia, who wrote and produced every track, with Matthew Tomasi and Steven Mark Colyer assisting on some of them. The label describes more than four years spent building the album and the visual world around it before its release on May 12, 2022. It is a concept record: its narrator, whom Cain has called her "dark, evil twin," is a preacher's daughter trying to escape her family in the American South in 1991, ten years after her father's death.

"Gibson Girl," "Strangers" and "American Teenager" came out as singles in the spring of 2022. The album did not chart on its digital release; when it was issued on vinyl on April 4, 2025, it entered the Billboard 200 at number ten and Top Album Sales at number one, making Cain the first openly transgender artist to reach the Billboard 200's top ten. The "American Teenager" video above was directed by Silken Weinberg and filmed in Cain's Florida hometown.
