This is the standard compact disc of Tales of a Failed Shapeshifter, the debut studio album by Los Angeles singer-songwriter Em Beihold, issued by Republic Records on a single disc with a May 15, 2026 street date. The album first arrived on February 27, 2026, when the CD sold through the label's and the artist's own stores came with a signed insert under a separate barcode; this pressing is the plain disc without it.
Eleven songs run just over 29 minutes, recorded between 2022 and 2025. Three singles came out ahead of the album in 2025: "Brutus" in July, "Hot Goblin" in September and "Scared of the Dark" in October. Beihold co-wrote every track. James Flannigan shares credits on four of them, "Scared of the Dark," "Brutus," "Van Gogh" and "Strong Medicine," while Jason Suwito and Nick Lopez co-wrote "Unicorn" and "Hot Goblin."
The record follows her 2022 EP Egg in the Backseat and the single "Numb Little Bug," which reached No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is certified platinum by the RIAA. Republic's own notes quote Beihold describing the period after that song as an emotional whiplash, and the album as "a story about coming back to myself in the form of pop." It peaked at No. 69 on the UK Album Downloads Chart.
