Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This edition of Elvin Jones's Dear John C. belongs to Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series, the audiophile reissue line that Verve Label Group and UMe built their 2026 slate around, drawing on the Verve and Impulse! catalogs. Matthew Lutthans mastered it from the original analog tapes, Quality Record Pressings (QRP) pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, and it ships in a tip-on gatefold jacket. The label's product photography shows the original cover art, Stereo A-88 badge included, and a black disc with the orange-and-black Impulse! center label.

The sessions ran at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on February 23 and 25, 1965, with Bob Thiele producing, and the record was Jones's first for Impulse! as a leader. The John C. of the title is John Coltrane, in whose quartet Jones had played since the start of the decade. Charlie Mariano is on alto saxophone and Richard Davis on bass. Roland Hanna plays piano on the title track, "Love Bird" and "Ballade," and Elvin's brother Hank Jones takes the bench for "Feeling Good," "Anthropology" and "Fantazm."

The program places Charles Mingus's "Love Bird," Duke Ellington's "Fantazm" and Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie's "Anthropology" next to popular songs including "Everything Happens to Me," "This Love of Mine" and "Feeling Good," the Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse number written for the stage musical The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd. Reviewing the album for AllMusic, Michael G. Nastos called it underrated and "deserving of an excellent rating."
