Verve Essential Vinyl Series 140g Black Vinyl LP

This single LP belongs to Verve Essentials, the vinyl reissue series Verve Records and UMe built around the label's 70th anniversary. Ella & Louis is one of its first five titles, which share an October 9, 2026 street date and a 140g black vinyl pressing; the other four are John Coltrane's Ballads, Stan Getz and João Gilberto's Getz/Gilberto, Billie Holiday's Body & Soul and Charles Mingus's Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus. Verve's own notes frame the series as a way into its catalog for newer jazz listeners, pairing good sound with original artwork at an accessible price.

The jacket keeps the 1956 front cover as issued: Phil Stern's photograph of the two singers, the Verve "A Panoramic True High Fidelity Record" banner and the original MG V-4003 catalog number, with an Essential Vinyl Series sticker added on the front.

Norman Granz, who founded Verve, chose eleven ballads for the session, most of them at slow or moderate tempos, and recording began on August 16, 1956 at the new Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Granz produced, though Armstrong had the final say on songs and keys. Behind the two voices and Armstrong's trumpet are Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass and Buddy Rich on drums.

Released in October 1956, it was the first of three albums the pair made for Verve, ahead of Ella and Louis Again in 1957 and Porgy and Bess in 1959. Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums placed it at number 636 in 2000.
