Violet PET Plastic 2LP Set With 4-Page Insert

Real Gone Music presses this two-LP set on violet PET plastic, the first collection of Dusty Springfield's United Artists recordings. Most of the 24 tracks were pulled from the original American masters for the first time, and Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision remastered the whole collection for vinyl. Joe Marchese's notes fill an LP-sized four-page insert with period photographs the label describes as rarely seen. The label frames the set as the next volume in its project of documenting Springfield's work through the 1970s.

Springfield had parted with ABC/Dunhill and moved to Los Angeles, where she abandoned an album in 1974. According to Real Gone, Elton John courted her for his Rocket Records label, but when she returned to recording in 1977 she signed with United Artists. Songwriter Steve Dorff produced two of his own songs with her as candidates for a first single, and "Let Me Love You Once Before You Go" briefly bubbled under the Billboard Hot 100.

Roy Thomas Baker, then known for his work with Queen, produced It Begins Again at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles between April and September 1977, with a session crew that included guitarists Jay Graydon, Jeff Baxter and David T. Walker and keyboardists Joe Sample, David Paich and Richard Tee. United Artists released it in the US in February 1978, and it reached No. 41 on the UK albums chart. Living Without Your Love followed in January 1979, produced by David Wolfert from sessions at ABC, United Western and Cherokee, with Will Lee on bass and string arrangements by Nick DeCaro and Gene Page.

Five non-LP bonus tracks complete the set, among them Tom Moulton's promotional-only extended disco mix of "That's the Kind of Love I've Got for You." Issued on a promotional 12-inch, it reached No. 31 on Billboard's dance club chart, and Real Gone's notes connect it to her collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys a decade later.
