Deluxe Edition on Two 180 Gram LPs

Run Out Groove released this limited deluxe edition of Dusty in Memphis in March 2020, catalog number ROGV-089. The original eleven songs fill the first LP, and the second holds fourteen bonus recordings making their first appearance on vinyl. Pete Weiss at Verdant Studio in Vermont and Jeff Powell at Take Out Vinyl in Memphis did the vinyl mastering. Both records are 180 grams and come in a tip-on gatefold jacket printed by Stoughton, carrying the original Atlantic cover and new liner notes.

Atlantic released the album in the United States on March 31, 1969. Springfield had signed with the label on the condition that she work with its chief producer, Jerry Wexler, who made the record with Arif Mardin and engineer Tom Dowd. The rhythm tracks were cut at American Sound Studio in Memphis with the house players known as the Memphis Boys, guitarist Reggie Young and bassist Tommy Cogbill among them, and the Sweet Inspirations sang backing vocals. Springfield finished her vocals afterward in New York. The songs came from Gerry Goffin and Carole King, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Randy Newman, and Burt Bacharach and Hal David, among others.

"Son of a Preacher Man" reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, but the album stalled at No. 99 in the US and missed the British Top 40 entirely. Its reputation built slowly. It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001, the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry in 2020, and Rolling Stone placed it at No. 83 on its 500 greatest albums list that same year. During the Memphis sessions in November 1968, Springfield also urged Atlantic to sign a newly formed band she had never seen; she knew its bassist, John Paul Jones, who had played behind her on stage. Largely on her advice, the label signed Led Zeppelin.

"Willie & Laura Mae Jones" and "That Old Sweet Roll (Hi-De-Ho)" were cut in New York in May 1969 for a second Wexler album that was never finished, and "What Do You Do When Love Dies" is an outtake from the Memphis sessions. Most of the rest come from shelved 1970 sessions with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and from Faithful, the album Jeff Barry produced in 1971 that went unreleased. Its master tapes were later lost in a fire, all but a mono mix of the title track, and the Faithful recordings here come from reference copies Barry had kept.
