Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram LP in Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This is the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series edition of the 1962 Ellington and Hawkins date, issued by Verve and UMe on May 13, 2022 under catalog number B0033795-01. Ryan K. Smith mastered it at Sterling Sound from the original analog tapes. Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, and Stoughton Printing made the old-style tip-on gatefold jacket. Chad Kassem of Acoustic Sounds supervised the reissue. The sleeve reproduces the original Impulse! stereo artwork, catalog A-26. The record keeps the eight-track running order of the 1963 LP, four tracks a side, without the bonus track added to the 1995 CD.

Coleman Hawkins plays tenor saxophone, and Ellington plays piano with six members of his orchestra: Johnny Hodges on alto, Harry Carney on baritone and bass clarinet, Lawrence Brown on trombone, Ray Nance on cornet and violin, Aaron Bell on bass and Sam Woodyard on drums. Hawkins recalled that Ellington had first proposed a record together about twenty years before it happened. The session took place on August 18, 1962, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Van Gelder engineering and Bob Thiele producing. Impulse! released it in 1963. "Self Portrait (Of The Bean)," written by Ellington with Billy Strayhorn, is Ellington's portrait of Hawkins.

In 1995 The New York Times placed the album among the great records of the 1960s, and among the best by each of the two men. In 2022, the year of this reissue, it reached No. 67 on the German albums chart.
