Rhino Reserve 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This is the Rhino Reserve edition of Donny Hathaway's Live, a February 2026 Rhino release timed to Black History Month. Matthew Lutthans cut the lacquers from the original analog master at The Mastering Lab, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing's plant in Oxnard, California. It plays at 33 1/3 RPM on a single LP in a gatefold jacket, catalog number RES1 386.

Live was first released in February 1972 and draws on two 1971 engagements. Jerry Wexler suggested a live record for Hathaway's third Atlantic album: side one was recorded at The Troubadour in Hollywood in late August, side two at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village in October. Wexler and Arif Mardin produced it, and Mardin handled the mix. The album reached No. 18 on Billboard's Top LPs chart and No. 4 on its Top Soul LPs chart.

The set pairs Hathaway's own material with covers of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," Carole King's "You've Got a Friend" and John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." It carries two extended solos: Hathaway on electric piano in "The Ghetto" at The Troubadour, and Willie Weeks on bass in "Voices Inside (Everything Is Everything)" at The Bitter End. The band also includes Phil Upchurch on lead guitar for side one, Cornell Dupree on lead guitar for side two, Mike Howard on guitar, Fred White on drums and Earl DeRouen on congas.

Rolling Stone placed Live at No. 48 on its 2015 list of the 50 Greatest Live Albums of All Time, and Victor Wooten named it among his 10 essential bass albums in 2005. Lalah Hathaway, Donny's daughter, later recorded "Little Ghetto Boy" for her own 2015 live album.
