Dolly Records marks ten years of Pure & Simple with this limited single-LP variant, pressed on a colored vinyl the label names Watercolor Dream and issued alongside a CD reissue of the same album. All ten tracks sit on one disc, five to a side, in the original running order.

The album grew out of two concerts at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium in August 2015, billed as "Dolly Parton: Pure and Simple," with Parton fronting a four-piece backing band. The following weekend brought four more shows at Dollywood, and a similarly stripped-down record and tour came out of them. Parton produced the album herself. It first appeared on August 19, 2016, a joint venture between Dolly Records and Sony Music Nashville on RCA, and the 64-date tour across the United States and Canada was her biggest in 25 years.

Pure & Simple debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. It was her seventh album to reach the top of the country chart, and her first in 25 years. The title track was the lead single, followed by "Outside Your Door" and "Head Over High Heels," each issued with a lyric video. "Head Over High Heels" name-checks Adele in its opening lines.

Most of the songs were new, but two came from her years with Porter Wagoner. "Tomorrow Is Forever," first recorded as a duet with Wagoner, became a solo here. "Say Forever You'll Be Mine" also dates from the Porter and Dolly era and had been used in the film Coat of Many Colors. Parton told Rolling Stone she "revamped and revised" both in a simpler way. "Forever Love" was written for her 50th wedding anniversary, which fell in 2016.
