Dollar Brand, Don Cherry & Carlos Ward - The Third World-Underground (Vinyl)

Reissue with OBI

Wewantsounds issues the album on a single LP with a four-page insert and an OBI strip, in the original artwork. The audio is remastered from the original masters at Colorsound Studio in Paris, and the insert carries new bilingual liner notes, English and French, by Jacques Denis.

The music was recorded live at the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen in 1972: Abdullah Ibrahim, then recording as Dollar Brand, on piano, Don Cherry on trumpet and Carlos Ward on alto saxophone. Dollar Brand and As-Shams produced the session, and Toshiyuki Abe mastered it.

Trio Records issued it in 1974 on its Nadja imprint, in Japan only, and it stayed there. The label describes this pressing as the first international release of the record.

Of the music, Denis writes that "more than half a century later, the music in this album, emancipated from all preordained order, still surprises, offering a delight of the present moment that lingers long after the needle leaves the groove."
