20th Anniversary Blueprint Edition on Transparent Blue Vinyl

Saddle Creek marked twenty years of Read Music/Speak Spanish with this single LP, pressed on transparent blue vinyl at GZ. Ted Jensen remastered the album at Sterling Sound for the reissue. The new jacket redraws the original artwork as an architect's blueprint, complete with a title block dated for the anniversary, while the inner sleeve carries the 2002 cover in its original colors.

Inside is a fold-out photo collage poster and a stamped manila envelope holding printed lyric sheets. A download card adds two digital-only bonus tracks, "What's New For Fall" and "Give Me the Pen," neither of which is cut into the vinyl; both come from the band's 2001 debut EP, The Happiest Place on Earth.

Read Music/Speak Spanish was the debut album by Desaparecidos, the Omaha band Conor Oberst formed in 2001 with Denver Dalley, Landon Hedges, Ian McElroy and Matt Baum. Dalley, not Oberst, was the band's primary songwriter. The five recorded it in a week at Presto! Recording Studio in Lincoln, Nebraska, and were still mixing when the September 11 attacks happened; Saddle Creek issued it on February 11, 2002 as the label's forty-second release. Its songs take on suburban sprawl, chain-store expansion and debt, and a song like "Greater Omaha" counts the drive-thrus and parking lots along the way. The album later picked up a cult following, and the band toured it through 2002, including dates opening for Jimmy Eat World.
