Deftones recorded their second album at Studio Litho in Seattle between April and June 1997, with Terry Date producing alongside the band, Ulrich Wild engineering with him, and Matt Bayles assisting. It was mixed at Larrabee West in West Hollywood and mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in New York.

The line-up is Chino Moreno on vocals, Stephen Carpenter on guitar, Chi Cheng on bass and Abe Cunningham on drums, with Frank Delgado adding effects. Max Cavalera guests on "Headup."

The album reached No. 29 on the Billboard 200 on 43,000 copies in its first week and stayed on the chart seventeen weeks. The RIAA certified it platinum in June 2011, and it has gone gold in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Two singles came off it: "My Own Summer (Shove It)" in November 1997 and "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" the following July.

The disc runs a little over thirty-seven minutes. Two unlisted tracks, "Bong Hit" and "Damone," follow a stretch of silence at the end of "MX" — a CD-only tail that the vinyl does not carry.
